Do you want to be left behind?
Posted on: Tuesday, 26 August 2008
I hope that the readers of this column don’t hold the idea that I am some all wise and knowing techno “gadget girl”. Far from it - just like you I often need to propel myself into the learning curve of new technology rather than embrace it eagerly.
Why bother?
Firstly, I intend to be around for a long time and I believe deeply that technology offers me a template for an easier, more functional lifestyle. Just look at the significant shifts in labour intensive work that mostly women don’t need to perform compared to 20 years ago. Floorcare is just one example. Gone are heavy, upright appliances which have been replaced with lighter, more efficient and manoeuvrable products that are not only safer for you and your family’s health but suck up the pet hair as well!
Secondly, I am vain. I consider that I have invested a lot of time, energy and finances into my personal and professional development and I don’t want to be left behind by school children. Especially those who seem to have digital technology embedded into their psyches. I also don’t want a blank look (or a frown) to cover my face when the term “social media” is used.
That’s why I now have to leave this column to study the manual for my new LG Secret touch screen phone and put aside my trusty Nokia.
Definitely out with the old! |

You may recall our story a few weeks ago about Roslyn Sportelli, 25, a fully-qualified real estate agent and also a young gamer who plays 45 hours per week. At the time, I was very surprised at this investment, but research from the American Heart Association (AHA) indicates that Roslyn and her fellow gamers may be missing out on more than drinks down at the pub. ... I wasn’t surprised to hear that women are the fastest-growing segment of the video games market.
