Front-loading washing machines are kind to your clothes and to the environment.

Why would I buy a front-loading washing machine? For consumers, a front-loader's main point of appeal is that is considered to be far more environmentally friendly than conventional top-loading washing machines. Clean clothes, clean world.

Why is the door on the front? Because front-loaders use an entirely different washing mechanism to top-loaders. Conventional machines wash with the aid of a large upright agitator and a vertically-spinning drum. A front-loader has no agitator; instead, there is an outward-facing, horizontally-rotating drum. This washes clothes by repeatedly lifting them out of the water and plunging them back in. The orientation of the drum necessitates the door to be at the front.

How are these washers better for the environment? In three main areas - they use less energy (if you wash in warm or hot water), less washing powder and less water. According to the SaveWater Alliance, a Victoria-based action group, front-loaders use up to 70% less water than conventional machines, or 36,000 litres per year for a typical household.

What are the other benefits? Many people believe that front-loaders are kinder to clothes - because they don't have the agitator. Front-loaders are also quieter and smaller. Additionally, they have higher spin speeds, which saves on drying time.

What are the drawbacks? Front-loaders are typically more expensive, though you'll eventually recoup this difference in lower water and power bills, and you may also qualify for a rebate from your local council or water company.

Another drawback is that a front-loader's washing cycle is up to 40 minutes longer than a conventional machine. In addition, you have to bend down to load and unload your washing, and you can't add clothes once the cycle has started. You may also be limited in your choice of colour and finish.
