Blu-ray Disc player?

What is it? This plays Blu-ray Discs which store high definition video and are the next generation in digital storage. Blu–ray Discs can hold up to more than five times more data than a standard DVD.
How does it work? While a standard DVD relies on a red laser to read and write data, Blu-ray Disc uses a blue-violet laser instead, hence the name. You can use a Blu-ray Disc player as you would a standard DVD player.
Why would I want one? To experience incredibly sharp pictures and vivid colours. The extra storage capacity of Blu-ray Discs also means plenty of room for extra content and special features. Combined with the new interactivity layer adopted by the format, you can access the menus, graphics and special features on a whole new level.
Would I need to replace my DVD collection? No, Blu-ray is backwards compatible with DVD. Several leading consumer electronics companies have already demonstrated products that can read/write CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray Discs. Most Blu-ray players support upscaling of DVDs to 1080p/1080i, so your existing DVD collection will look even better than before.
How much do they cost? Expect to pay around $600 for an entry level model. Sony’s PlayStation 3 console also has a Blu-ray player. |
