LensPen?

| The LensPen features a chamois tip impregnated with a carbon-based cleaning compound. |
What is it? This is a small, pen-shaped device that uses a patented system to clean lenses on products such as cameras, camcorders, binoculars and telescopes.
How does it work? A retractable brush on one of the pen is used to remove dust particles. On the other end is a flexible chamois tip. This is impregnated with a carbon-based, non-liquid cleaning compound. Wiping this tip against the lens in a gentle circular motion removes oily residues (such as fingerprints) and contaminants.
Why would I want one? The LensPen is marketed as a no-mess, no-fuss system for cleaning expensive optical lenses. It’s quicker, easier and kinder to your lenses than the finger-and-tissue method most of us use. And it comes with a handy clip for carrying in a shirt pocket, just like a real pen.
How safe is it to use on my lenses? The makers of the LensPen say that its cleaning tip consists of the softest suitable materials, and is assembled in a "clean room" environment. This assures that the cleaning tip is free of any unwanted substances.
How long will a LensPen last? Each time you use the device, the carbon compound in its tip is replenished. How long this lasts will depend on how dirty the lens is and what type of contaminant is present. However, the LensPen was tested by removing 500 fingerprints in a row from a lens with no discernible loss of cleaning quality.
Where can I buy it? The LensPen is available at speciality photographic outlets such as Camera House and Paxtons. It will set you back around $20 to $25.
Is there something similar for other glass surfaces? Yes. The company that makes the LensPen has created similar products for cleaning mobile-phone camera lenses, computer screens, TV monitors, navigational equipment and more. |
