Get broadband on the go with a USB modem.

What is it? This is a modem that plugs into a free universal serial bus (USB) port on a notebook or desktop computer.

Why would I want one? USB modems are marketed specifically as a mobile-Internet solution. Provided you have a suitable Internet account and a computer with a spare USB port, they allow you to access your Internet account on the go, rather than having to hoof around looking for an Internet café or wireless hot spot. They’re very compact, and therefore easy to carry in a notebook bag.

The modem in my study at home plugs into a USB port. Is this the same thing? No. Although the desktop unit to which you refer is in the strict sense a “USB modem”, the term more commonly applies to the portable, out-and-about variety.

Are there other methods of remotely accessing my Internet account? Certainly! You can also buy portable modems that slip into a notebook’s PC Card slot. And some computer companies now make notebooks with built-in Internet access for specific Internet providers. Dell and Toshiba, for instance, sell notebooks with built-in Bigpond broadband.

So why would I opt for a USB model? The USB format is compatible with both PC and Macs. Software is pre-installed on the modem, making it easy to use, and to swap between computers. Thirdly, most people are now familiar with USB plugs and ports; even a novice computer user could handle using a USB modem.

Where do I get one? Typically, you’d buy one from your Internet provider. On its own, a USB modem will cost up to $299. However, many providers now include a modem for free as part of a mobile-broadband package. Check the fine print, though, as these packages can be pricey.
