Cent-a-Meter?

| The Cent-a-Meter can be programmed to sound an alarm when you exceed a specific power usage. |
What is it? The Centa-a-Meter, an Australian invention, is a device that allows consumers to monitor the cost of their electricity usage in real time.
How does it work? The device comes with a special sensor that must be installed inside your fuse box by a licensed electrician. The sensor plugs into a transmitter, which then relays information about your electricity usage to a small, battery-powered LCD monitor. You can sit this anywhere you like around the house – in your kitchen, for example.
Does it calculate my electricity bill? No; rather, the device is designed to inform you about how much electricity your household is using at any point in time, and how much this costs you per hour. For instance, when you turn on your tumble dryer, you’ll notice an instant upwards spike in your power consumption and energy cost.
Why would I want one? To save money and the environment. The makers of the Cent-a-Meter claim that being more aware of your energy usage will help you cut your power bills by 20%. The device will also tell you the amout of greenhouse gas generated by your power use.
How much will it cost? Uninstalled, the device costs around $200. It is available from various eco-friendly vendors online. Prices vary, so shop around. |
