. . . remote-control power point?

 |
| A remote-control power point can help you save the planet and save money. |
What is it? This is a kit that allows you to take command of a power point with a remote control, rather than having to physically switch it on and off.
How does it work? The kit includes a remote control and a special plug that you insert into the relevant power point. The remote can then be used to “talk” wirelessly to the power point from up to 50 metres away.
OK, but why would I want one? It allows you to access difficult-to-reach power points - for example, those stuck behind an entertainment unit, book case or cupboard – and to switch on and off at the wall any appliances plugged into those points.
Why bother switching them off at the wall? The main reason is to save energy. Many appliances continue to consume electricity even after you have turned them off with the appliance’s own remote control or even with the on/off button. The main offenders are computers and entertainment equipment such as televisions, DVD players, set-top boxes and stereo systems.
Electricity used in this context is called “standby power”. An estimated 10% of domestic energy usage in Australia is from standby power, so switching appliances off at the wall will save the planet and save you money. (For more information about standby power, go to www.standbysaturday.com.au.)
Switching appliances off at the wall also minimises the risk of accidental fire.
 |
A kit containing a remote and one plug will cost about $39.95.
|
How much does it cost? A web site called Cool Green sells a kit containing one remote and one wall plug for $39.95, plus postage. The remote can actually control up to four power points, but you will need to buy additional plugs separately ($24.95 each).
Alternatively, if you have several appliances in one entertainment unit, you could plug them all into a power board. Just make that you don’t overload the board, and that it has a safety cut-off switch. |
