Kambrook's Slow Cooker range - A working woman's best friend!
With less people eating out during this belt-tightening climate, www.connectedwomen.net.au has uncovered an interesting trend that’s great news for working women and their families. It comes in the form of a humble and time-honoured cooking appliance – The Slow Cooker.

Yes, you heard it here! The Slow Cooker or Crock Pot as it has also been known is making a comeback! When introduced in the 1970’s it gained major popularity at a time when women were entering the workforce in greater numbers.

The slow cooking method was a mum’s best friend, enabling her to prepare dinner easily and quickly in the morning, leave for the day and have a readymade meal upon arriving home. It became a mainstay in kitchens across Australia.

The modern, money conscious woman
Fast forward a couple of decades and Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show that between 1992 and 2006, the proportion of women who were employed increased from 48% to 55%. Add to this the definite trend toward more people bunkering down at home during the present economic downturn.

Connected Women has heard from companies such as Homedics, Sunbeam, and Breville reporting strong demand for DIY beauty items including hair straighteners and body massagers, as well as epilators, as people save money on expensive beautician and hairdresser appointments.

So too are we seeing brands like Kambrook experience strong growth in products like the slow cooker.

Return of the Slow Cooker
Until recently the readymade, slow-cooked, delicious stew or casserole was something of a fading art form. What was once considered an old-fashioned way of cooking, has regained its status. Slow cookers are a great way to entertain with minimal effort and the perfect product for busy families who want to come home to a hot, readymade meal after work.

ABS figures also state that around 60% of households with two parents and dependent children have both parents working. With more single parent families and women working full-time, the time available for food selection and food preparation has decreased.

A survey of 200 women aged 18 years and over in Sydney and Melbourne found that on average, six evening meals a week were eaten at home and one was eaten away from home (e.g. at a restaurant). Of these six evening meals eaten at home, five were prepared in the home from scratch- the sixth was bought pre-prepared (e.g. ready-to-eat, ready-to cook, take-away).

Clever cooker
The slow cooker is designed to cook safely all day when unattended, which means no stirring is required. It’s completely economical, you can use cheaper cuts of meat as the ingredients are left to cook for up to 10hrs in natural juices, tenderising the meat until succulent, ready to serve.
