ConnectedWomen get fired up about online shopping
Posted on: Wednesday, 28 September 2011
By Shivaun Hales

Reports from News Limited last week revealed retailers are considering charging customers a fee for trying on clothes or testing out electrical items, an effort to stop sales being taken online. The idea reflects retailers’ frustration with online shopping, but is this the right approach? www.connectedwomen.net.au put the question to an online network of women and opened up a can of worms.

It wasn’t surprising to hear cries of despair from female shoppers opposed to the ‘try-on fee’ but www.connectedwomen.net.au also uncovered some useful feedback about what retailers could be doing to keep their customers coming back.

Sovy Lie, founder and head fashion stylist at Couture Roulette said the ‘pay-to-try’ concept would make retailers look desperate, but she didn’t discount the importance of bricks-and-mortar retailers.

Try before you buy

“Women still go to the shops because we want to touch, feel, and try on the products before we buy,” said Lee.

Lee suggested retailers struggling with online competition, to ‘up the ante’ by improving customer service in-store and offering additional value.

Spokesperson for consumer watchdog Choice, Ingrid Just, gave a similar response.

“Customers are definitely browsing more online, but they still enjoy the additional customer service they receive at bricks-and-mortar retailers,” Just said.

“If customers are offered an engaging in-store experience, they will keep coming back,” she added.

Founder of online site www.mumsonthego.com.au Linda Anderson still prefers to shop in a traditional stores rather than online.

“I would love to spend more time in shops but certainly not if we are hit with another fee, this would drive me to shop more online just out of principle,” said Anderson.

Women seek child friendly shopping trips

A child friendly store layout with wider aisles for prams, and a toy box for children to play with would be enough to entice Anderson into a store.

“Instead of putting up obstacles, retailers should make it easier for customers, and that’s something online does really well,” she said.

Tara Thomas said an additional cost in-store was a terrible idea, she said what customers need is more incentives to step into the store in the first place. Whether that’s through loyalty cads, VIP shopping nights or special monthly sales.

Step into a virtual dressing room

While many shoppers still prefer to physically try items in-store before purchasing, software developers have now created ‘virtual dressing rooms’. www.connectedwomen.net.au got to experience augmented reality first hand at the Online Retailer Conference & E-commerce Expo in Sydney yesterday.

While the adoption of augmented reality is not yet widespread, the technology is very impressive.

Augmented reality specialists, ExloreEngage showed expo visitors it was possible to see whether a pair of sunglasses suit their face shape simply by standing in front of a camera. The image of the glasses is then shown on the users face, which is projected onto the screen. All of this is done without physically touching the product.

The products even move with the user and can be viewed from any angle, and consumers can send images of themselves in various outfits to friends for feedback.
