I heard recently that makers of portable navigation devices are adding a new feature called “Live Traffic”. What is this, and how do I get it?

Yes, Live Traffic is a new feature that’s just starting to emerge in the portable-navigation market this year.

However, it’s not quite accurate to say that the makers of navigation products are “adding” this function to their devices. What they are adding is the ability for their devices to receive an external radio channel called SUNA. This channel has become generically known as “Live Traffic”.

As you may already know, navigation units sold by companies such as TomTom, Navman, Garmin and Pioneer use a satellite-powered Global Positioning System (GPS) to guide you from A to B. That’s great, but what if there’s an accident along the route the device has chosen for you? And what if you’re already 10 minutes late for your best friend’s wedding? Disaster!

The SUNA Traffic Channel helps overcome such issues. It broadcasts live traffic information to enabled navigation devices via an FM radio signal.

You can learn instantly about problematic traffic incidents – for example, road work or accidents – along with the location of the area affected, length of delay, detour options and amended arrival times.

To access the SUNA service, you will need a navigation device from a company that has officially partnered with SUNA – TomTom and Pioneer are among the first - and a special receiver to pick up the channel. You may also need to upgrade to the latest mapping software.

It should also be noted that Live Traffic may not necessarily be available in all areas. TomTom, for example, is introducing the service this month in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Other metropolitan areas are planned for later this year.
